Theragnosis is a newly emerging biophotonic application that is a treatment strategy combining therapeutics and diagnostics. In this presentation, molecular nanoparticles, concentrated with optically and/or chemically active (fluorescent, chemiluminescent, or photosensitizing) components, will be introduced as a new class of all-organic biophotonic nanomedicine. Such a multi-molecule integration approach offers a nanoscopic reactor system where chemical or photochemical reaction can occur efficiently in response to external stimuli (light, O2, and H2O2). Advanced -conjugated molecules and polymers were designed, synthesized and formulated into water-dispersed polymer nanoparticles capable of efficient disease imaging/treating performances as well as facile systemic circulation in the blood stream for in vivo disease targeting. Features of their biomedical in vivo applications to diagnostic optical imaging and light-activated therapy in murine disease models will be discussed. |
