The electrochemical oxidation reactions, which can produce hydrogen during electrolysis, can degrade organic contaminants in water simultaneously. This study focused on the production of molecular hydrogen during electrochemical treatment of organic matter and colloids present in municipal wastewater. The electrochemical system used in this study consisted of a BiOx-TiO2/Ti anode and two stainless steelcathodes. Thecurrent efficiencyand energy efficiency increased with municipal wastewater containing organic matter. COD and protein were almost completely removed, butboth the DOC and carbohydrate levels in treated water remained unchanged. These phenomena might be ascribed to the dissolution and conversion of particulate colloids to soluble fractions. |
