We introduce a new type of core-shell structured electrorheological (ER) particle system of monodispersed poly(2-methylaniline) coated polystyrene (PMAN/PS) microspheres fabricated via a controlled swelling-releasing process based on the pre-fabricated PS seeds in dispersion polymerization. These synthesized PMAN/PS microparticles, of which the surface is compactly wrapped by PMAN, are obtained, as confirmed by scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscope images. Fourier-transform infrared spectra and thermo-gravimetry analysis also confirm chemical composition and thermal stability of the particles. Their special ER behaviors including both steady flow and dynamic oscillation were observed by a rotational rheometer at various electric field strengths. |
