In polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell, the hydrocarbon based polymer electrolyte membranes generally have a few issues to overcome: i) low proton conductivity compared with Nafion; ii) reduction of proton conductivity and cell performance at low humidity; and iii) chemical degradation of the membrane by hydroxyl radicals. So far, we introduced only one type of additive into the membrane to report its effect on the membrane and cell properties. In order to optimize the membrane system for commercialization, we have to investigate the properties of membranes embedded with all additives together. In this study, a variety of composite membranes based on SPEEK were prepared to investigate all essential membrane properties such as proton conductivity, water uptake, mechanical stability, cell performance, and oxidation stability. The effect of presence of combined additives on such membrane properties was studied more detail for comparison. |
