This study was performed to examine the combustion characteristics of cypress specimen for the constructional interiors, especially focusing on smoke generation characteristics. Smoke production properties were measured using a cone calorimeter (ISO 5660-2). The external heat flux was maintained at 50 kW/m2. Flame retardants were synthesized by using boric acid or boronic acid and tetraethoxysilicate. The total smoke release rates of BA/Si and BA/IBBA sol were 322.5 m2/m2 and 444.3 m2/m2 respectively and decreased by 29% and 2% respectively compared with cypress specimen. However, the total smoke release rate of PBA/Si sol was 520.8 m2/m2, which was 15% higher than that of cypress specimen. The total smoke production of PBA/Si sol was 4.6 m2, which was 15% higher than the 4.01 m2 of untreated wood. The flame retardants of boron/silicon sol have been shown to play a role in reducing smoke production. |
