A study has been made of surface modification of polymesr by ion implantaion to make the surface properties of multiple functions. The substrates used were PP(polypropylene), PET(polyethyleneterephthalate) and PS(polystyrene). The effects of ion implantation on the improvement of electrical conductivity of polymers were investigated in relation to ion species and fluences. The Xe+, Ar+ and N2+ ion implantaion were performed at energy 50KeV with fluences ranging from 5×1015 to 1×1017 ions/cm2. The conductivity increased more than 6 orders of magnitude after ion implantation. Strong decrease of the sheet resistance in the ion beam modified samples is connected with progressive carbonization and graphitization of the degraded polymers. The wettability for Xe+, Ar+ and N2+ ion implanted specimens were investigated by contact angle measurements after ion implantaion. It is concluded that ion implantation is useful to improve electrical conductivity and wettability of PP, PET and PS. |
