One-Step Synthesis of Photo-luminescent Core/Shell Poly(styrene/thiophene) Nanoparticles |

Photo-luminescent core/shell poly(styrene/thiophene) [poly(St/Th)] nanoparticles were prepared by one-step synthesis with emulsion polymerization in aqueous medium. Polystyrene (PSt) core and polythiophene (PTh) shell were formed by free-radical polymerization initiated by potassium persulfate (KPS) and oxidative polymerization by Fe3+-catalytic reaction, respectively. The core/shell morphology resulted from the predominant interfacial reaction of thiophene monomer induced by the electrostatic attraction between the sulfate (SO42-) group of anionic surfactant and Fe3+ions. The core/shell structure of poly(St/Th) particles was confirmed by field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In addition, the effect of the core/shell morphology on photoluminescent (PL) intensity of solid state was investigated by comparing emulsion state of poly(St/Th) nanoparticles. |
