The palm oil is one of the important renewable resources for making polyols based on vegetable oils. Recently, the unsaturated palm oil was epoxidized and then ring-opened with variety of alcohols to form the polyols. In this work, the ring-opening of epoxidized palm oil (EPO) was carried out in the presence of methanol and fluoroboric acid catalyst, observed transesterification and oligomerization as side reactions. The transesterification reaction of triglyceride of EPO and methanol produced diglyceride, monoglyceride and glycerol. In order to control the transesterification, the effect of temperature (40, 50, 60, 70 oC) during the reaction time (15, 30, 45, 60, 90, 120 minutes) was studied by spectroscopic, chemical and physical methods. The percentage of transesterification of the polyols increased in the following order: 70 oC > 60 oC > 50 oC > 40 oC and the obtained polyols show narrow molecular weight distribution (1.13 – 1.24). |
