A patternable polyimide liquid crystal alignment layer has been synthesized to apply for new liquid crystal display modes to be required a multi-domain fabrication processes. The polyimide with a photo-patternability as well as a photo-aligning property was synthesized from alicyclic dianhydride, cyclobutane-1,2,3,4-tetracarboxylic dianhydride [CBDA], and 3,3’,4,4’-benzophenone tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride (BTDA), 4,4'-dimethyldiaminodiphenylmethane [DADM], Cyclobutane ring derived from CBDA decomposed by an exposure of linear polarized UV light at 254 nm, which resulted in photo-alignment of liquid crystals. Further, the polyimide can be crosslinked by an exposures of UV light at 365 nm owing to the photo-crosslinking reaction of carbonyl groups in BTDA and methyl hydrogen in DADM moieties. Optically anisotropy and birefringence of the patterned homogeneous alignment layer were investigated by a photo elastic modulator (PEM). |
