A new gemini type of cationic photo-responsive surfactant, N-(azobenzene-4-oxy-2-hydroxypropyl)-N-(octadecyloxy-2-hydroxypropyl)-N,N,N,N-tetramethylethylene diammonium dimethylsulfate (G18AZ0DA), was synthesized and studied for surface properties under UV/vis irradiation. The surfactant had ammoniums in both head groups, two carbons as a spacer, an azobenzene in one tail group, and an alkyl group in other tail group. The trans-G18AZ0DA was converted to the cis-trans mixtures containing 92.5% of the cis form when exposed to UV light, and was reversibly converted to 73.7% of the trans form when exposed to visible light. The critical micelle concentration (CMC) value of the trans-G18AZ0DA was 2.79 x 10-5 mol/L, while the value of the 92.5% of cis-G4AZ0DA was 5.48 x 10-5 mol/L, indicating that the ratio of CMCcis to CMCtrans of G18AZ0DA is 1.97. Besides, we have studied photo-responsive behavior containing forming test, and emulsion stability of the synthesized surfactant. |
