Control of the nanostructures is essential for sensitive and reliable bio-sensing while it remains a big challenge for the scientific community. Although systematic efforts have been invested to control the growth of nanoseeds with the addition of coating agents (surfactants, polymers and/or synergetic ions), the final structures of the nanocrystals were limited only to symmetric ones with identical surface facets (e.g. nano-sphere, rod, cube). The synthesis of irregularly shaped nanoparticles was empirical rather than scientific, without principles to follow. Here, we developed groundbreaking technology of highly facile preparation of nanometals with direction-following, shape- and size-controlled structures via regulation of metallic atom crystallization by biomolecules. This technology unlocks the toolbox full of smart biomolecules (e.g. polypeptide, DNA, RNA, protein) for the synthesis of structure-programmable plasmonic nanoparticles. |
