Polymeric binder has turned out to be very critical for stable operation of high capacity silicon (Si) anodes, as the binder could stabilize the electrode films even during the large volume change of Si. In this talk, I will present novel approaches for functional binder design. They include 1) the use of mussel-inspired catechol functional group [1], 2) multi-dimensional cross-linkable hydrogen bonding network [2], 3) self-healing polymer network [3], and 4) host-guest interaction network [4] (see figure below). The series of these investigations suggest the usefulness of noncovalent polymer interactions and the future role of supramolecular chemistry in the binder development. |
