Properties of sulfonated graphene oxide/Nafion composite for proton exchange membrane fuel cell |

Nafion is commonly used as ion exchange membrane for proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). Since the membrane used for fuel cell has been restricted to commercial membranes, of which properties cannot be controlled, the performance of cell is limited. Loading of graphene oxide (GO) in Nafion membrane provides mechanical reinforcement to the membrane while decreasing proton conductivity of the membrane. In this study, we prepared modified solution-cast Nafion membranes by incorporating sulfonated graphene oxide (SGO) in Nafion solution to prevent decreasing of proton conductivity. Tensile test and proton conductivities of the membranes with different SGO content were evaluated. Tensile test results showed that the tensile strength of the SGO/Nafion membranes was improved compared to the recast Nafion membrane. Proton conductivity of SGO/Nafion membrane was also improved compared to GO/Nafion membrane due to hydrophilic sulfonic acid groups of SGO. |
