For flexible liquid crystal displays (LCDs), the mechanical stability of devices and the uniform alignment of LC molecules on plastic substrates are critical factors of retaining the long-term performance. Here, LC cell was simply fabricated by conformal contact between the micro-patterned elastomer substrates, fabricated by a replica molding technique, and therefore the mechanical stability of the cell was improved. The microstructure on the upper substrate functions as columnar spacers for uniform cell gap. On the other hands, the narrow microstructure on lower substrate has influence on LC alignment, therefore its optical behavior. In order to investigate LC behavior under the influence of the microstructure, optical transmittance of the cell inserted between crossed or parallel polarizers was measured. |
