Nanomechanical Thermal Analysis of the Glass Transition of Polymers Using Silicon Cantilevers |

Various polymers were coated onto one side of a silicon cantilever and the variations with temperature in the deflection, resonance frequency and Q-factorwere measured simultaneously. The difference between the volume expansion coefficients of polymers and silicon induced the cantilever to bend, and this variation was used to determine the glass transition temperature as well as the physical properties of the polymer sample. In addition, the changes in the resonance frequency and the inverse of the Q factor of the cantilever are related to the variations in the elastic modulus and the loss tangent ofpolymers respectively. The loss modulus ofpolymers was calculated from the resonance frequency and Q factor and used to determine thedynamic glass transition temperature of polymers. Measured dynamic Tg was varied with respect to resonant frequency of cantilevers. A series of measurements at various frequencies were carried out to obtain the accurate Tg and apparent activation energy for the glass transition. |
