Enhanced Durability of the polymer coating layer onto cobalt-chromium substrate by nanocoupling for drug-eluting stents |

The commercially available drug-eluting stents still suffer from polymer coating defects (cracking or delamination) that accompany the balloon expansion and it might be a source of thrombosis. The main purpose of this study is to improve the durability of the coated layer onto cobalt-chromium (Co-Cr) alloy through surface polymer grafting. We established a major three-step process for the surface modification. The first step includes initiator grafting for atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The second step includes surface-initiated ATRP of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) as a hydroxyl group containing compound. The third step includes surface-initiated ring opening polymerization (ROP) of L-lactde. The initiator immobilization and the polymer grafting were successfully confirmed by ATR-FTIR, static water contact angle, SEM, and XPS. The topography as well as the roughness of the surface was evaluated by AFM. |
