Sericin is a minor protein of silk proteins and has unusual high content of serine and threonine. We previously found that the sericin can synthesize silica from TEOS(tetraethyleneorthosilicate) like the silicatein from marine sponges. Silica particles in nanometer scale were found at the beginning of silica formation. In this study, we tried to make sericin-silica nanocomposite through the mechanism mentioned above. Sericin-silica complex were prepared by mixing the sericin and TEOS for 3 hours and the unreacted TEOS was washed and sericin were coagulated at the same time by the addition of ethanol. Sericin-silica complex were dissolved in LiCl/DMSO solvent, and further fabricated into various forms like film, fiber, and beads. The sericin-sillica complex solution had extremely high viscosity and better performance were expected after fabrication. This results suggest further application of sericin as a engineering material. |
