Structures of Hydrophobic Channels in Hot-Pressed NafionInvestigated by Solid-state NMR |

Hot-pressing has been a typical process to increase electric contact between electrodes and PEM to prepare membrane-electrode-assembly but the hydrophobic channels in PEM have been reported to be influenced by hot-pressing. 2H NMR spectroscopy can reveal the structures of hydrophobic channels in PEM through non-zero residual quadrupole coupling values. Hydrophobic channel structures of PEMs have been investigated by determining residual quadrupole coupling values of 2H2O in PEMs. However, mainly stretched PEMs have been studied. In this work, 2H2O in hot-pressed Nafion 117 samples was investigated with 2H NMR spectroscopy and compared with the 2H NMR data of Nafion 117 without any stress applied and stretched Nafion 117 to investigate how hot-pressing affects the hydrophobic channels in Nafion 117. |
