In this study, the two porous carbon materials (activated carbon, activated carbon fiber) were treated by fluorine, and the VOCs adsorption behavior of these materials were investigated. The surface treatments (fluorination or oxi-fluorination) carried out with N2, F2 and O2 gas at room temperature. The surface property of treated porous carbon materials was investigated by XPS, and specific surface area was assessed by N2 adsorption at 77K. The VOCs adsorption experiment was carried out using gas chromatography (GC), under the 100 ppm gas concentration, gas flow rate of 300 cc/min and 0.01 g adsorbent. As a result, in case of toluene gas, the breakthrough point of fluorinated ACFs is increased up to 27% at 100 ppm toluene concentration. In case of benzene, the time to reach the saturation point was increased about 14 h. Therefore, these treatments by fluorine can be applicable to effective adsorption of VOCs. |
