Temperature-Responsive Fire-Extinguishing Microcapsules Produced via in-situ Condensation Polymerization |

This study introduces a practically useful approach for fabrication of multi-layered fire extinguishing microcapsules (SFMCs) which burst a fire extinguisher (EA) at target temperatures. For this, mechanically robust SFMCs consisting of EA core and a polymethylmethacrylate shell were fabricated from EA-in-water emulsion. We further incorporated an outer polyurethane (PU) shell layer by conducting in-situ condensation polymerization at the interface of SFMCs. Finally, the releasing temperatures of EA were controlled depending on the degree of polymerization of PU, which was confirmed by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). These results highlight that a smart fire extinguishing technology could be developed by controlled engineering of shell layers. |
