Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate), PHB, or its copolymers are biodegradable thermoplastic materials. Some chemo-physical and mechanical properties of PHB or its copolymers are well known to be comparable to those of polypropylene. Over the conventional commodities, PHB or its copolymers have the advantage of biodegradability and biocompatibility. Unfortunately, they present the drawbacks of a poor thermostability and a relatively low impact resistance. In this study, to improve the impact resistance of PHB and its copolymers, the effect of biodegradable plasticizers for poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate), PHBV, was examined using thermal and mechanical analyses. The level of plasticizers in the PHBV blend films was kept at 20%. Most plasticizers evaluated were effective in depression of the glass transition temperature as well as in increasing the elongation at break and impact strength of PHBV. Also, the effect of plasticizers on the morphological structure of PHBV was investigated by polarizing microscopy and wide angle X-ray diffraction. |
