Chemical etching is an easy-to-apply method, frequently used in the modification of the surface and structure of the metals while these two properties are important factors that affect the performance of Porous transport layers in proton exchange membrane water electrolyzers (PEMWE). In this study, the commercial titanium porous transport layers (Ti-PTLs) were modified with 6M H2SO4 acid for 20 minutes at different temperatures (40oC, 60oC, 80oC). The surface morphology, structure, and electrochemical properties of PTLs were analyzed by scanning electron microscope(SEM), contact angle measurement, porosimeter, polarization, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The results show the higher temperature of acid etching, increases the porosity and hydrophilicity of PTLs. Also, the electrochemical performance and resistance of the PTLs were analyzed using a single-cell (25cm2) test. |
