The Effects of Comonomer Types on Microstructure of Ethylene Copolymers |
초록 |
Metallocene-catalyst based copolymerization of ethylene and a-olefins has recently been employed to synthesize polymers with improved physical properties (yield strength, elongation, fracture toughness, etc). This physical property is related to their comonomer contents. It is well established that melting temperature, crystallinity, and crystal thickness are reduced by the presence of short chain branches, nearly independent of branch types (except methyl), leading to the logical conclusion that such comonomer units are excluded from the crystalline region. However, significant the difference in tensile properties between 1-butene and 1-octene copolymers is well known but remains unexplained. We have employed SAXS, WAXS and AFM to investigate the difference in the microstructure between the butene and octene copolymers of the same comonomer composition. Our results indicate that the primary difference lies in the interfacial region and the lateral size of the lamellar crystallites. |
