Decomposition Kinetic Studies of Polyglycollides by Thermogravimetric Analysis |

Biodegradable polymers especially aliphatic polyesters have attained attraction of researchers in drug delivery systems and biomedical applications as the ester bonds support degradation process by cleavage under physiological conditions and pH around 7.4 and especially polymers derived from α-hydroxy acids (PHA) are used most extensively. Polyglycolic acid (PGA) is the very first member of biodegradable polymers. High molecular weight PGA in market is synthesized by ring opening polymerization of glycolide (a cyclic diester). In present research, the PGA was synthesized under vacuum in presence of mathanesulfonic acid as catalyst and diphenylsulfone as solvent shows maximum inherent viscosity as 0.2. Kinetic analysis is performed in comparison with commercially PGA (polyglycolide). TGA was performed at different heating rates from 5 to 50oC and resultant TGA data was analyzed. |
