Cellulose nanofibril (CNF) is a promising material replacing synthetic polymers because cellulose is the most abundant natural biomaterials on earth and degradable and sustainable. For practical applications aggregation tendency and optical property of CNF would be carefully controlled. We found that transparency of CNF film was enhanced with the smaller CNF diameter and narrower diameter distribution. CNF surface was modified for dispersion in polymer matrix. CNF/PVA composite film as an example is expected to have numerous applications in various fields such as membranes, flexible optics, packaging and biomedical applications. CNF was diameter-controlled and surface-modified for the composite fabrication. CNF/PVA composite was cross-linked by thermal treatment or using cross-linkers (Poly(acrylic acid), malic acid, etc). The composite film was characterized using SEM, FT-IR, contact angle, DSC, and so on. |
