Dual responsive polymers were synthesized by a combination of atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and highly efficient ‘‘click chemistry’’. An alkyne-functionalized poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate)(PHEMA-alkkyne) was prepared by two consecutive reactions: synthesis of poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA) by ATRP, followed by esterification reactions between pentynoic acid and the hydroxyl side groups of HEMA. Primary, secondary, and tertiary amines with azido group in the other end have been synthesized and clicked onto PHEMA-alkkyne backbone. Molecular weight, molecular weight distribution, and the degree of functionalization by click reactions were determined by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and 1H NMR spectroscopy. In aqueous solution, these polymers have shown tunable lower critical solution temperature (LCST) behavior induced by pH |
