Microphase-Separated Structures of a Cylinder-Forming Block Copolymer in Thin Films |
초록 |
As structural evolution of microphase-separated structure in a block copolymer thin film (thickness ranging from 20 ~ 150 nm) upon annealing the film from as-spun state was examined by transmission electron microtomography (TEMT). A poly(styrene-block-isoprene), whose number-average molecular weight was 51.2 × 103, was spin coated on a mica substrate. The block copolymer shows hexagonally-packed cylindrical structure in bulk state (volume fraction of polyisoprene is 23%). The copolymer films on the substrates were further annealed at 120°C for various annealing times under vacuum. The annealed films were floated off the mica substrates and were picked up onto Cu mesh grid. TEMT as well as transmission electron microscopic (TEM) observations were carried out with these grids. The initial morphology right after the spin coating turned out to be “bicontimuous-like” disordered structure. Upon annealing, the morphology changed to cylinders lying parallel to the substrate as expected. Intriguingly, depending on thickness of the block copolymer film, the cylindrical morphology further changed to spheres. It seems that a subtle distortion of cylindrical lattice in certain thickness (“confinement”) drove such morphological change. Stability of the cylindrical- and spherical-lattice was examined in terms of the free energy of the system as a function of distortion on the lattices. |
