Electron Spin Resonance Study on Free Radical Polymerization of Furfuryl methacrylate |

In recent years, furfural based biomass materials have drawn much research interest in particular as furan-derived monomers can be prepared quantitatively from C5 and C6 carbohydrate resources for preparation advanced materials. Although furan-derived monomers such as furfuryl methacrylate (FMA) have been considered to be very promising, their inherent chemical structures offer challenges as undesired crosslinking occurs through double bond of furan ring in a polymerization reaction of methacrylate double bond leading to formation of gel which has limited utility. In this regard, we investigated the kinetics for competitive addition reactions for the different kind of double bonds by observing the dormant propagating radical in a radical polymerization of FMA through electron spin resonance spectroscopy (ESR). As result, kinetic constants for the addition reactions of initiator radical to methacrylate and furan ring were determined. |
