Carboxymethyl dextran functionalized MnO nanoparticles (CADMOs) were developed for biomedical applications. Hydrophobic MnO nanoparticles have been transferred from organic solvent to aqueous solution through a robust ligand exchange procedure. Carboxymethyl dextran (CM-Dextran) is used to replace the original hydrophobic ligands on the surface of MnO nanoparticles with water exchangeable nanostructure and finally render them highly water soluble. The physical properties of the MnO nanoparticles, such as longitudinal and transverse relaxivity, paramagnetic behavior, and cubic structure are maintained after ligand exchange. Additionally, the extra abundant uncoordinated carboxyl groups of CM-Dextran allows for further coupling of Cy5.5 and thus provide high sensitivity of cellular imaging and biodistribution imaging method in ex vivo. The optical/MR images using NIR-CADMOs demonstrated an excellent dual-modal imaging ability. |
