Polymer crosslinking by UV has been used due to its utmost delicacy and convenience. Many former methods, however, have limitation that they only depend on the concentration of crosslinking agents. A new photo-crosslinkable polymer was designed for overcoming that problem. Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) was selected as a backbone polymer because of its excellent mechanical properties, high water absorption and applicability of hydrogels. Since benzophenone forces polymers to photo-crosslink, aminobenzophenone should be synthesized to modify the PVA. 4-aminoethoxybenzophenone was easily acquired by mixing 4-hydroxybenzophenone and 2-chloroethylamine in DMSO. Aminobenzophenone could react with hydroxyl group of PVA under the carbonyldiimidazole (CDI) addition. This modified PVA enabled the process of gel patterning to simplify by controlling the irradiation time. |
