Multi-functionalized molecules have been considered to be promising optical materials in optical devices. We newly designed and synthesized a dual photo-functionalized amphiphile (abbreviated as DPFA) containing a photo-polymerizable diacetylene as well as a photo-isomerizable azobenzene. From analytic results, we identified the molecular packing structures and phase transition behaviors of DPFA. DPFA formed two layered structures: a smectic A mesophase at high temperatures and a smectic crystal phase at lower temperatures. Multi-stimuli responsive optical device was fabricated by utilizing the photochemical isomerization and the topochemical polymerization of DPFA in the thin films. Smart light shutter is based on the reversible trans-cis photo-isomerization of azobenzene, while thermo-responsible color switching film is based on the photo-polymerizable diacetylene.
