For the development of multi-stimuli responsive optical devices, we newly synthesized a molecule of the dual photo-functionalized amphiphile (AZD). It contained both a azobenzene to obtain a photo-reversible orientation of AZD and a photo-polymerizable diacetylene to increase the layer stability. The molecules formed the layer structure in the smectic (Sm) A liquid crystal (LC) phase at higher temperatures and the ordered crystalline phase was found at lower temperatures. Light-induced phase transformations of molecules in SmA and KM phases provided us a lot of chances for the fabrication of remote-controllable optical devices. The light-modulating device was fabricated by applying the trans-cis isomerization of azobenzene group in the SmA phase and the reversible color switching via the photo-polymerization of diacetylene groups in the ordered crystalline phase.
