제목 Generation of Uniform Polymersomes from W/O/W Double Emulsions in a Microfluidic Device
초록 Vesicular structures can be prepared from various molecules such as phospholipids or surfactants. It is known that amphiphilic block copolymers also aggregate in aqueous solution to vesicular structures, or polymersomes. Usually, these structures are generated by the conventional methods such as film swelling, solvent injection method and electroformation. In this study, an efficient approach for making polymersomes from monodisperse W/O/W double emulsions will be described. W/O/W double emulsions enable us to obtain the sustained release of drugs encapsulated in the polymersomes.1,2 Here, double emulsions were obtained by shearing one phase into the other immiscible phase in the presence of mPEG-PDLLA diblock copolymers in a mircrofluidic device. The oil phase was a organic solvent, such as acetone or toluene that contains mPEG-PDLLA diblock copolymers. W/O/W double emulsions were collected and the oil phase was removed by evaporating the organic solvent. This led to the self-assembly of the dissolved mPEG-PDLLA diblock copolymers into polymersomes. By varying flow rate and the concentration of diblock copolymers, we could control the size of polymersomes as well as double emulsions. Especially, double emulsions with one internal aqueous droplet were prepared to perform standard characterization with optical microscopy and confocal laser scanning microscope.
