Colloidal particles have been widely utilized for stabilizing the emulsions, and due to the irreversible adsorption of particles onto the interface, they can impart a much greater stability of emulsions than that with conventional surfactants. Thus, high internal phase emulsions(HIPEs) which have been hardly achieved due to the high internal pressure between dispersed droplets, can be stabilized using colloidal particles. However, pure silica particles possess the hydrophilic nature, thereby resulting in poor adsorption onto the oil-water interface. As a result, the surface treatment of particles have been necessary to make them as the good stabilizer, and this process can adversely affect the efficiency of the HIPE production. In this study, we have sought to the method to achieve the stable HIPEs using only the original silica particles without the surface treatment. To do so, we have investigated the effect of the composition of reactants on the external shape of silica particles. |
