We studied the effect of Surface wettability on the alignment of LC molecules in the cell having different polarity balance. We demonstrate quantitative contact angle range inducing TFCDs and we compared the results of two cells (bulk-cell, -channel cell) in order to demonstrate the side-wall effect. It is known that 8CB (4’-octyl -4-cyanobyphenyl) molecules adopt different orientations depending on their polarity of the surface. In addition, we prepared a variety of bulk cells and microfluidic channel cells possessing different polarities of the upper surface and the bottom surface. Each substrate was coated with Teflon-AF, PDMS, Silicon, Glass, Polyimide (vertical, planar), spin-coated Carbon and Poly-ethyleneimine(PEI). We measured contact angles for quantitative analysis and we also presented the experimental results that TFCDs exist in a certain range of the contact angle |
