A comparative study on the mechanical property and hardening of room temperature-curable epoxy resins for wooden boat |

Human-powered pleasure craft is a wood-based composite materials which is a mixture of glass fiber and epoxy resin. Commercial epoxy resin for human-powered pleasure craft have serious problems. One is the epoxy resin is difficult to work such as roll or brush, saturates fiberglass fabric in room temperature due to their fairly high viscosity and the other is Mixing and pouring the epoxy introduces lots of bubbles to the mixture that there will be entrapped tiny air bubbles. In this study, we have prepared the epoxy resin using a diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A(DGEBA) resin with cyclohexane dimethyl amine and modified aliphatic amine as hardener for improving the adhesion properties and setting up the optimum curing condition. The hardening characteristics and glass transition temperature of prepared materials observed by DSC and accelerated aging effects on the physical properties were investigated comparing with commercial products. |
