We synthesized polyelectrolytes that have cyclodextrins (CyDs) with charged units and used them to construct polyelectrolyte multilayers with oppositely charged polyelectrolytes. CyDs are cyclic polysaccharides that have hydrophobic interior pocket and hydrophilic exterior rim. Due to the hydrophobic cavity of CyDs, they have been used to dissolve hydrophobic drugs in water media through host-guest complexation. Weak polyelectrolytes can have different charge density based on their pH environments; therefore, using a fine tuning of the assembly pH conditions, we could control the surface properties of the deposited films. We studied the host-guest complexation using these CyD-containing films. Cellular interactions with these multilayer films were also tested including epitheial cells and neuron cells. |
