Synthesis of Carbon Doped ZnO Nanostructures and Their Visible Light Photocatalytic Activity |

Zinc oxide (ZnO) is one of the most advanced semiconductor materials useful for wide range of applications. The intentional and controlled incorporation carbon impurities into the ZnO lattice can be a typical strategy to alter the bandgap energy, thereby enabling it as visible light active catalyst. Here, we employ a new method to prepare carbon doped ZnO, where poly(styrene-block-2-vinylpyridine) was used as template to induce ZnO nanostrings and carbon source as well. Reconstruction of the morphology via solvent annealing, incorporation of ZnO by sol-gel process, and direct carbonization were employed to attain the target hybrid-nanostructure. An absorption band obtained in the visible region is considered as a fingerprint of intra-bandgap. The visible light activity of carbon doped ZnO nanostructure was demonstrated by the degradation of p-nitrophenol. |
