제목 | Spatio-Temporal Inhomogeneity and Emergence of Hierarchical Structures in Polymeric Systems |
초록 | Hierarchical structure exists ubiquitously in nature and is a consequence of the competition processes among a wide variety of dynamic phenomena which take place over very large time scales at different length scales. It has been known that materials with such a structural hierarchy ranging from nanometer to micrometer exhibit exceptional mechanical properties [1]. For polymer materials, hierarchical structures in the nanometer scales have been tailored by coupling microphase separation to self-assembling driven by hydrogen bonding [2]. Here, we will demonstrate that by coupling photochemical reactions to phase separation of polymer blends and by manipulating the spatio-temporal inhomogeneity of the reaction with ultraviolet light, a variety of hierarchical structures such as “lamellar in lamellar” [3], “droplet-in-droplet”, “droplet-in-spinodal”, “spinodal-in-spinodal” [4] as well as spatially graded spinodal structures [5] can be obtained in the micrometer scales. The time-evolution of phase separation at different hierarchies of the morphology will be reported and the mechanism for the emergence of these hierarchical structures will be discussed.
