IPMC is very effective material which show large bending strain in the presence of low applied voltage. It consists of ion-exchange membrane sandwiched between two thin platinum plates. To overcome the limitation of commercial ion-exchange membranes, new membranes were prepared by radiation-grafting on fluoropolymers. IPMCs using these membranes showed large strain and fast response in comparison with Nafion-based IPMC. And the generating force was improved by increasing membrane thickness. Poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) layers were formed on two membrane surfaces by electorchemical polymerization of 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene. After platinum layers were deposited on PEDOT layers, the actuation properties were enhanced by combining IPMC with conductive polymer. |
