Supramolecular self-assembly of low-molecular-mass organic gelators leading to gel formation has attracted increasing interest. Supramolecular gels have been studied as soft materials for use in applications such as drug-delivery systems, tissue engineering, sensing devices, separations and optoelectronic devices. Many researchers have successfully incorporated metal ions into organic gelators to form metallogels and coordination polymer gels. Coordination polymer gels have been reported to show unusual functional properties such as redox responsiveness, catalytic action, absorption, emission, magnetism and electron emission. In this symposium, I will present new types of metal-organic framework gels for use in biological and environmental applications that were developed in our research laboratory for the selective detection and separation of specific guest molecules. |
