Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) are an electrochemical device that takes advantage of microbial interaction with electron donor-acceptor to convert organic matter into electricity. In this research, low cost hydrocarbon electrolyte membrane was sulfonated and made into ion-conducting polymer, and tested for proton exchange membrane in MFC system. Proton conductivity and permeability of hydrocarbon electrolyte membrane was confirmed to examine the feasibility and the unit cell performance in order to compare with cell with Nafion membrane for the use in MFC system. These results indicate that the low cost hydrocarbon electrolyte membranes is promising for MFC application. |
