For several years, the interest for nanotechnologies in the paint and coating industry is growing. Researchers have shown that the uses of nanoparticles, such as colloidal silica, in coatings, the properties are strongly improved. In this study, the effect of the addition of silane modified colloidal silica dispersions in white deco paints has been investigated regarding dirt pick-up resistances, hiding powers and open times. The use of Bindzil CC301 improved the dirt pick-up resistance, DPU, of water based white deco paints; the improvement depends on the nanoparticles content. Surprisingly, the paint opacity tends to increase with the nanosilica content due to better pigment spacing. Finally, improvements in Open Time, without affecting surface tension during paint drying were also observed. Silica surface enrichment is the likely explanation for the enhancement of Open Time and anti-soil properties. |
