Optical Detection of Biological Molecules with Fluorescent Carbon Nanotube/Polymer Hybrids |

In this talk, I will talk about the carbon nanomaterials/polymer hybrids for selective and sensitive detection of biological molecules. In particular, fluorescent single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT) functionalized with synthetic polymers or proteins in non-covalent manner to selectively recognize the specific targets such as reactive oxygen and nitrogen species will be presented. First, the SWNT optical sensor for selective detection of nitric oxide (NO) was designed. To selectively detect NO in living cells, SWNT-dextran hybrid was synthesized as a near-infrared fluorescence sensor. This SWNT hybrid sensor was successfully applied to in-vitro detection of NO. Second, the array of SWNT/collagen hybrid for single molecule detection of hydrogen peroxide produced during angiogenesis was developed. We utilized the SWNT hybrid array to measure the single molecule efflux of H2O2 from human umbilical vein endothelial cells in response to angiogenic stimulation. |
