The effect of ozone treatment of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) film was studied in the surface functional groups and surface energetics of the film. Treatment conditions were varied for treatment time, total amount of transferred ozone, and ozone concentration. The introduction of polar groups on LDPE film after ozone treatment was confirmed by FTIR-ATR and XPS analyses. The change of the surface free energy of the LDPE film was examined by contact angles. The ozone treated-LDPE film showed decreased water contact angles, mainly due to the increased concentration of oxygen-containing functional groups. From the dyeability tests using Kubelka-Munk equation, it was found that the ozone treatment played an important role in the growth of total surface free energy of LDPE film surfaces, resulting in the improving the dyeability for basic dyeing agent.
