Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a noninvasive optical treatment method in which the topical or systemic delivery of photosensitizing drugs is followed by irradiation with broadband red light. Verteporfin is a hydrophobic polyporphyrin oligomer with two structural isomers, a short photosensitivity period, and maximum absorption at 689 nm. In terms of antitumor applications, verteporfin has been shown to be effective against various cancers affecting the eye in several clinical studies. In this study, a novel drug vector for verteporfin delivery was developed by designing multifunctional and biodegradable block copolymer-gold nanoparticle (AuNP) conjugates. The particle size, size distribution, and morphology of FA-PEG-P(Asp-Hyd)-DHLA-modified AuNPs were investigated. We also investigated their biocompatibility, cellular localization property, and phototoxicity against HeLa cells. |
