Preparation of side group LC block copolymer (SGLCP)/liquid crystal microcapsules for bio-sensing applications |

Amphiphilic diblock copolymer of poly(acrylic acid)-b-poly(4-cyanobiphenyl-4-oxyundecylacrylate) (PAA-b-LCP) was synthesized by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. The PAA-b-LCP was then embedded into silica microcapsules, by in-situ, which contains 4-cyano-4´-pentylbiphenyl (5CB, nematic liquid crystal (LC)) in the core. The hydrophobic LCP block is miscible with the hydrophobic 5CB and incorporates in the micelle core. The hydrophilic PAA block is in the outer shell. Folic acid (FA) was subsequently conjugated to the PAA block to preferentially target KB cells (epithelial cancer cells) that have folate receptor on the cell membrane. The configuration of the LC (5CB) in the microcapsules has changed as a result of ligand (folate)-folate receptor interaction forces. This observation thus demonstrates the potentiality of an ligand conjugated LC microcapsules as a biosensor for specific cell and protein detection. |
