In this study, [4-cyano-4-pentylbiphenyl (5CB,nematic liquid crystal)] microdroplets were prepared by using emulsion system. A simple, versatile and label free technique based on mono-disperse liquid crystal emulsion droplets detects and distinguishes tumors and normal cells. Amphiphilic diblock copolymer of poly(styrene)-b-poly(acrylic acid)(PSt-b-PAA) was used as s surfactant to prepare the emulsion. The hydrophobic styrene block is miscible with the hydrophobic 5CB and incorporates in the micelle core. The hydrophilic PAA block is in the outer shell. Folic acid(FA) was subsequently conjugated to the PAA block to preferentially target KB cells(epithelial cancer cells) that have folate receptors on the cell membrane. The configuration of the LC(5CB) in the emulsion has changed as a result of ligand (folate)-folate receptor interaction forces. This observation thus demonstrates the potentiality of a ligand-conjugated LC emulsions as a biosensor for specific cell and protein detection. |
