Thermosensitive Microgels Prepared from Precipitation Polymerization of N-isopropylacrylamide |

Thermosensitive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) microgels that have regularity on a sub-micrometer diameter scale were prepared by precipitation polymerization method in water at 70 ˚C using potassium persulfate as an initiator and N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide (MBA) as a crosslinking agent. The size and swelling behavior of the PNIPAAm microgels as a function of temperature was investigated using a TEM and a particle size analyzer. PNIPAAm microgels could not be obtained or coagulated at MBA concentration of higher than 3% to total monomer weight. The diameters of the PNIPAAm microgels immersed in water at 10 ˚C and 50 ˚C were 845 nm and 181 nm, respectively. Swelling ratio of the microgel calculated from these diameters was 103 and it decreased abruptly around its lower critical solution temperature of 32 °C. |
