Biodegradable Shape-Memory Polymers for Biomedical Applications |

Shape-memory polymers have the ability to return from a temporary shape to a permanent shape by external stimulus such as temperature. The aim of this study is to investigate biodegradable polymers with shape-memory property through polymer-blend method and to characterize their shape-switching in body temperature (37 °C). In this study, some biodegradable polymers were dissolved in chloroform and film samples of various ratio were prepared by solution casting. The shape-memory properties were characterized using dynamic mechanical analysis. The polymer blend showed good performance of shape-fixity and shape-recovery based on glass transition temperature as a function of blend ratio. It is expected that this polymer could potentially be used in vascular closure device and fully biodegradable stent. |
